Source Materials Table and Interview-Gabby

I interviewed my niece, Gabby Reader, going into 1st grade, 6 years old. Unfortunately I was not able to record her interview so I will sum it up:

Gabby is still getting used to being around a lot of people in school. Most people are nice, there is one boy in her grade that was chasing people a lot and causing them to get hurt so he had to talk with the principal but he keeps doing it, even after being punished. She is still grasping the concept of why it's important to be nice to others. She knows in theory what a bully is but I got the impression that, like a lot of children, they think a bully only does extreme things. For the most part she hasn't heard people lie or spread rumors about others and people are generally nice. She thinks that a more awareness could help kids to reduce bullying and to help others be nice. Knowing my niece, she has had an attitude problem when we've had family get togethers so I wouldn't be surprised if she had attitude with other kids. She is not comfortable going to her teacher about bullies or mean people.

I didn't do a Source Materials Table earlier but here's mine even though I'm in the middle of gathering my data:

Interviews-David

I also Interviewed David Adams, going into first grade. He was kind of shy so a lot of his responses were physical unless he had more to say.

Q: How do you feel about being in school with lots of people in class? Is it kind of crazy?

A: Nodded yes

Q: Have you ever known someone at school that has made you angry or annoyed?

A: No.

Q: Have you known someone that is different than you? Does things differently?

A: Shook his head.

Q: Have you ever seen someone be mean to someone else?

A: Shook his head.

Q: What would you do if you were at school and someone was saying to someone else that they looked ugly and fat? Would you say something or would you just kind of sit there?

A: I don't know...

Q: Do you think we should say mean things to other people?

A: Shook his head.

Q: How does it make you feel when someone is making you annoyed or frustrated?

A: Like I want to forgive them...

Q: When you're upset or having a bad day have you ever said something that wasn't nice that you didn't mean?

A: Shakes his head. I don't know...

Q: Have you ever heard someone say something that isn't true about someone else?

A: Shrugs

Q: Have you ever told lies about someone else?

A: Shakes head.

Q: Why is important to be nice to other people?

A: So that I can live with Heavenly Father again.

Q: What if you were sitting next to someone at school and they started to hit the person next to them? Would you try to stop them?

A: Yeah...

Q: What is a bully?

A: Someone that does mean things to other people.

Q: Do you think that sometimes people are bullies and they don't realize they're bullies?

A: Nods head yes.

Q: Do you think that if more kids thought about what they said before they did it that we'd have less bullies?

A: Nods head yes.

Interviews on bullying-The Twins

Brother Frohn gave me a good idea of how I can interview people about being bullies without having to find people who actually claim they were. I interviewed 3 children already and have about 7 more I'll be doing this week.

The first kids I interviewed were Alex and Andrew Meyer, twins, 8 years old, both have attention disorders, Andrew has mild Autism.

Andrew Meyer:

Q: Have you ever known someone who made you annoyed or angry?

A: Well, at school, Lorali. One day she was pushing me, I wanted to go down the big slide and she kept pushing me out of the way.

Q: When they made you angry, did you say anything to them or do anything to them?

A: I said "Hey!"

Q: Have you ever said something to someone when they're making you angry or annoyed?

A: Um...I don't know.

Q: Have you ever been so mad at someone that you accidentally hit them?

A: No. (Mom shakes her head yes)

Your brother?

Oh yeah!

Q: Do you know someone who is different than you?

A: Um, Alex. (Besides your brother, maybe at school?) Yeah, some people don't like playing with me because usually we like playing on the swings but usually we don't really ask people to play with us because we just like playing by ourselves and when someone comes to the swings we're like "Uh oh, I hope they don't ask me to get off."

Q: Do you know anyone who is sometimes mean to other people?

A: No.

Q: How do you feel when someone is making you angry or they're being weird?

A: Um, well if someone's being weird then I'm just like "They're weird." But if someone is making me angry then I'm just like "GRRRRR!!!" I feel steamy.

Q: When you're sad or having a bad day, do you sometimes say things that are not nice? On accident?

A: Yeah...

Q: How do you feel afterwords? Do you feel bad?

A: Yeah...

Q: Do you go say sorry to the person you said those things to?

A: Yeah...

Q: How do you think that person feels when we say mean things?

A: Sad.

Q: Do you sometimes have people say mean things to you?

A: I don't know.

Q: Have you ever said thing that isn't true about someone else?

A: I had that happen the other day, Alex was trying to get a bug and I thought he had killed it so I said "Bug killer!" and called him a bug killer.

Q: Have you ever heard someone at school say something isn't true about someone else?

A: I don't know, I can't remember.

Q: What would you do if you were at school and you saw someone being mean to someone else?
Would you try to stop them or be by yourself?

A: Be by myself.

Q: Do you think it would make them feel good if you tried to help and make them stop?

A: Yeah...Sometimes I just like being by myself.

Alex Meyer:

Q: Have you ever known someone who made you annoyed or angry?

A: These girls in first grade were like pretending like they were going to hang us up on the school roof and drop us down, they were just pretending. And we were like "Uh oh! Run!"

Q: Did it make you scared?

A: (Andrew: Yeah but it just turns out that Ella just loves me, she likes me super much.) Alex: Yeah I was like "Oh no, I do not want that to happen." so I ran away when they were chasing me.

Q: Have you ever said something to someone when they're making you angry or annoyed that you didn't mean that wasn't very nice?

A: Sometimes when Andrew, like, annoys me, I kind of say "I hate you!"

Q: What about at school?

A: That never really happens.

Q: Do you ever try to stop people when they're being annoying?

A: I try to stop Andrew from annoying me.

Q: But not at school?

A: I don't really remember that happening.

Q: Have you ever been so mad at someone that you accidentally hit them?

A: I hit my brother all the time, just my brother.

Q: Do you know someone who is different than you?

A: Sometimes people act crazy. Sometimes they're like "Hey dude! What're you doing?"

Q: What do you do when they're being crazy?

A: I'm just like "Woah, that's weird."

Q: Do you know anyone who is sometimes mean to other people?

A: Not really.

Q: How do you feel when someone is being weird?

A: Kind of like *widens eyes really big*

Q: When you're sad or having a bad day, do you sometimes say things that are not nice? On accident?

A: Yes...?

Q: Have you ever heard someone at school say something isn't true about someone else?

A: Uh...not really.

Q: Have you ever said thing that isn't true about someone else?

A: Well...sometimes I say I hate him (Andrew) when he's bugging me.

Q: Do you feel sorry after you say that?

A: Yeah, after a while.

Q: Why is it mean to say stuff like that?

A: Because it makes them feel bad.

Q: What would you do if you were in class and someone was being mean to someone else? Would you say something?

A: Yeah, I don't really know yet.
