Interviews on bullying-The Twins

Brother Frohn gave me a good idea of how I can interview people about being bullies without having to find people who actually claim they were. I interviewed 3 children already and have about 7 more I'll be doing this week.

The first kids I interviewed were Alex and Andrew Meyer, twins, 8 years old, both have attention disorders, Andrew has mild Autism.

Andrew Meyer:

Q: Have you ever known someone who made you annoyed or angry?

A: Well, at school, Lorali. One day she was pushing me, I wanted to go down the big slide and she kept pushing me out of the way.

Q: When they made you angry, did you say anything to them or do anything to them?

A: I said "Hey!"

Q: Have you ever said something to someone when they're making you angry or annoyed?

A: Um...I don't know.

Q: Have you ever been so mad at someone that you accidentally hit them?

A: No. (Mom shakes her head yes)

Your brother?

Oh yeah!

Q: Do you know someone who is different than you?

A: Um, Alex. (Besides your brother, maybe at school?) Yeah, some people don't like playing with me because usually we like playing on the swings but usually we don't really ask people to play with us because we just like playing by ourselves and when someone comes to the swings we're like "Uh oh, I hope they don't ask me to get off."

Q: Do you know anyone who is sometimes mean to other people?

A: No.

Q: How do you feel when someone is making you angry or they're being weird?

A: Um, well if someone's being weird then I'm just like "They're weird." But if someone is making me angry then I'm just like "GRRRRR!!!" I feel steamy.

Q: When you're sad or having a bad day, do you sometimes say things that are not nice? On accident?

A: Yeah...

Q: How do you feel afterwords? Do you feel bad?

A: Yeah...

Q: Do you go say sorry to the person you said those things to?

A: Yeah...

Q: How do you think that person feels when we say mean things?

A: Sad.

Q: Do you sometimes have people say mean things to you?

A: I don't know.

Q: Have you ever said thing that isn't true about someone else?

A: I had that happen the other day, Alex was trying to get a bug and I thought he had killed it so I said "Bug killer!" and called him a bug killer.

Q: Have you ever heard someone at school say something isn't true about someone else?

A: I don't know, I can't remember.

Q: What would you do if you were at school and you saw someone being mean to someone else?
Would you try to stop them or be by yourself?

A: Be by myself.

Q: Do you think it would make them feel good if you tried to help and make them stop?

A: Yeah...Sometimes I just like being by myself.

Alex Meyer:

Q: Have you ever known someone who made you annoyed or angry?

A: These girls in first grade were like pretending like they were going to hang us up on the school roof and drop us down, they were just pretending. And we were like "Uh oh! Run!"

Q: Did it make you scared?

A: (Andrew: Yeah but it just turns out that Ella just loves me, she likes me super much.) Alex: Yeah I was like "Oh no, I do not want that to happen." so I ran away when they were chasing me.

Q: Have you ever said something to someone when they're making you angry or annoyed that you didn't mean that wasn't very nice?

A: Sometimes when Andrew, like, annoys me, I kind of say "I hate you!"

Q: What about at school?

A: That never really happens.

Q: Do you ever try to stop people when they're being annoying?

A: I try to stop Andrew from annoying me.

Q: But not at school?

A: I don't really remember that happening.

Q: Have you ever been so mad at someone that you accidentally hit them?

A: I hit my brother all the time, just my brother.

Q: Do you know someone who is different than you?

A: Sometimes people act crazy. Sometimes they're like "Hey dude! What're you doing?"

Q: What do you do when they're being crazy?

A: I'm just like "Woah, that's weird."

Q: Do you know anyone who is sometimes mean to other people?

A: Not really.

Q: How do you feel when someone is being weird?

A: Kind of like *widens eyes really big*

Q: When you're sad or having a bad day, do you sometimes say things that are not nice? On accident?

A: Yes...?

Q: Have you ever heard someone at school say something isn't true about someone else?

A: Uh...not really.

Q: Have you ever said thing that isn't true about someone else?

A: Well...sometimes I say I hate him (Andrew) when he's bugging me.

Q: Do you feel sorry after you say that?

A: Yeah, after a while.

Q: Why is it mean to say stuff like that?

A: Because it makes them feel bad.

Q: What would you do if you were in class and someone was being mean to someone else? Would you say something?

A: Yeah, I don't really know yet.

Interviews

I've been working on doing interviews for my exhibit as well as some sketches (I will do more). Here's what I have gathered thus far:

Mini Exhibit Abstract

Here is my abstract:
As an information designer I sought to understand and help others to understand the effects of bullying in kids, how it gets started, and how we can better raise our children to love and express themselves in a healthy way. I want to show how the children being bullied are effected and how different environmental factors cause children to bully. In the end, there will be a call to action to eradicate this behavior as much as we can through love and understanding. I will be using infographics to relay data information in a unique way to cause the viewer to think.

I will be attending the R&CW so I have to have everything built and ready to assemble by July 16th. I have a lot going on but I hope to have something new developed each week. I already have two interviews, one from someone who was bullied really bad in their youth and one from someone whose brother is being bullied. I think what I need to focus on for the next couple of weeks is interviewing people about bullying experiences so that I have rich data to make my infographics.

Step 5

Ok so I had a lot of things come up last week that kept me from keeping on top of this project but here it is! I didn't have a lot of time to flesh out different concepts, I'm pretty happy with what I came up with. Someone told me it looks like a power point style that I had never heard of.

Here's the app:

And here's my video screen cast: http://screencast.com/t/M0MKC8WAbKN

Mini Exhibit Step 1

So I decided to do my exhibit on bullying and have a call to action to stop bullying and issue love. My exhibit will focus on the perspective of both parties, the bully and the person being bullied. I plan to do a walk-through exhibit where you have two entrances, one for each party. While you walk through one you can see the other side but you cannot understand because you're not in that moment. I plan to use black for the person being bullied and red for the bully. At the end of the exhibit I plan to hand out white hearts with red and black text with the call to order on it. Each walk through will show case infographics about bullying from those perspectives as well as stories from both sides.

I researched basic statistics and current posters for inspiration but I will be going out and interviewing people/their parents from people who have been bullied and those who have bullied. Since I have done the R&CW conference before so I want to do more than create interesting infographics to look at, I want to create an experience. I'm very excited for this project!!

Mapping Step 5

I finally figured out how to make a screen cast video! Yay! Here's my final images and video:

This project was a lot of fun! I learned a lot about mapping and how it can be used in a powerful way. What really makes digital mapping successful is captivating your audience. Pretty color choices and nice typography really is not enough, you need to go beyond the aesthetics and dig into the conceptual. What does your data have to say? How can you portray that in a way that is beautiful and speaks to the viewer, something they'll remember? I feel that I was able to go beyond the aesthetics and find a strong conceptual theme to utilize in the overall look, design, and layout of both of my maps. I struggled at first trying to create the spilled milk look digitally but once I sat down and attempted to create a physical version that's when things unhinged and I was able to get a good grip on this project. My link to my screen cast is listed above, enjoy!
